SUMMER 2016

W

hen you think of innovative inclusions to a

home, sanitary ware probably doesn’t spring to

mind first. It’s a well known fact that Australians

are late adopters of high-tech bathroom wares, not for a

lack of want, but because it always feels as though we’re one

of the last places on the planet to be blessed with the latest

and greatest. Over the past decade we’ve been exposed

to smart phones, smart TVs and even smart cooking

appliances but what about smart toilets... could they be the

next big thing?

Until the mid-twentieth century, the use of a bidet had

been limited to a small fraction of the population mainly

because it involved the installation of another stand alone

toilet-type unit in the bathroom. This meant that space,

plumbing, and most of all cost became the limiting factors

preventing more widespread use.

Fortunately, electronic bidet seats and non-electrical

bidet seats have come about since then and can easily be

installed in place of traditional toilet seats. Integrated toilet

bidets, such as the iconic Toto toilet suites, have also meant

that traditional toilets can be replaced altogether.

Like vanities, taps and sinks here, bidets have been

considered an essential addition to the bathroom of

European and Asian countries for decades now. And when

you are exposed to the many features and benefits of

bidets, it’s easy to see why they’re so highly regarded over

there. It seems word is spreading to our shores too as more

and more of these innovative all-in-one toilets are being

specified for residential homes, apartments and hotels

across the country. And there is one particular brand flying

the smart toilet flag high over here.

With Australian consumers demanding a more luxurious

bathroom experience, TOTO, Japan’s leading maker of

innovative bathroom products heeds the call by delivering

the world’s most sophisticated bathroom products,

elevating the bathroom from the merely functional to a total

relaxing experience through products that combine style

with some seriously impressive technology. One step inside

Mizudori Gallery/TOTO’s showroom in Zetland, south of

Sydney’s CBD, and it’s easy to be a little overawed by what’s

on offer.
