PLUMBING CONNECTION
AUTUMN 2015
A
s we kick off 2015, our Technical Committees are going
full steam ahead with their schedule of work. We are
optimistic for a number of Standards projects relevant
to the plumbing industry to be completed this year – so do
watch this space for updates.
UPDATED SAFETY REQUIREMENTS FOR ELECTRIC TOILET
APPLIANCES & STORAGE WATER HEATERS
Standards Australia has a close partnership with Standards
New Zealand to develop joint Australian and New Zealand
standards. The Joint Australian/New Zealand Technical
Committee EL-002, Safety of Household and Similar Electrical
Appliances and Small Power Transfers, have been working on
revising joint Standards relating to safety requirements for
electric toilet appliances and storage water heaters.
The 2006 edition of AS/NZS 60335.2.84 Household and
similar electrical appliances – Safety – Part 2.84, Particular
requirements for toilet appliances, has now been updated.
AS/NZS 603352.84 is an adoption of an international
standard published by the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) dealing with the safety of electric toilets
in which waste is stored, dried, or destructed, with a rated
voltage of not more than 250 V. This standard also applies
to electric equipment for use with conventional toilets, such
as automatic seat covering devices; chopping units; heated
seats; pumping units; and water heaters for shower units.
The latest IEC Standard, published in 2013, was adopted as
a joint Australian/New Zealand Standard 60335.2.84:2014 in
November and the 2006 version will be superseded. The main
changes are the addition of particular safety requirements for
spray seats and other testing requirements.
The Joint Technical Committee EL-002 has also reissued
AS/NZS 60335.2.21, Household and similar electrical
appliances – Safety – Part 2.21: Particular requirements for
storage water heaters, incorporating the latest amendments
from the 2012 IEC Standard (6th edition) on the safety of
electric storage water heaters for households, with a rated
voltage of not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances
and 480 V for other appliances. The principal changes in this
edition are the addition of safety requirements for immersion
heater units (fixed immersion heaters).
SOLAR AND HEAT PUMPWATER HEATERS
The Joint Australian New Zealand Committee CS-028
Solar Water Heaters has issued a third amendment in
November 2014 to AS/NZS 2712:2007, Solar and heat pump
water heaters – Design and construction. The Standard
specifies performance-based requirements for the
design and construction of solar and heat pump hot water
supply systems for household, commercial and industrial
installations, intended to deliver drinking water of acceptable
quality. The amendment brings references to other Standards
up to date, updates requirements for collectors, and provides
further performance evaluation methods.
