PLUMBING CO
NNECTION SUMMER 2016 61Any gasfitters who undertake work on a Type A gas device
system must have a current gas work licence. This covers
installing, removing, altering, repairing, servicing, testing
and certifying work related to the gas device.
Gas work licences are issued to individuals by the Chief
Inspector, Petroleum and Gas. They may be issued for all gas
work or may be endorsed or restricted. A gasfitter may be
restricted to gas servicing or may be endorsed for caravan
certification for example.
Gas licence holders must comply with all
relevant standards, codes of practice and guidelines.
They must also comply with requirements for compliance
certificates, defect notices and compliance plates.
To carry out gasfitting on building sites in Queensland, a
gasfitter also needs to hold a QBCC licence.
Gasfitters can apply to the QBCC to receive one of these
forms of licences:
∫ Trade contractor - full licence class.
∫ Nominee supervisor - supervising work on behalf of a
company.
∫ Site supervisor – supervising work as an employee of an
appropriately licensed person.
Gasfitters with a licence from another state can apply
for an equivalent QBCC licence without the need to provide
a technical qualification or experience. However, in some
cases the applicant may need to complete a managerial
qualification.
With a licence from the QBCC, a gasfitter can install,
commission, maintain, test, alter, repair and service a gas
system in any building or do related work of another class
noted in the licence.
GASFITTING TRAINING
TAFE Queensland is the main trainer of gasfitting in
Queensland with four campuses around the State.
The certificate III in gasfitting from TAFE Queensland has
core and elective units of competency requirements that cover
common plumbing skills, as well as gas fitting specialist units.
The plumbing industry insists training and assessments
are undertaken in real or closely simulated workplace
environments.
