PLUMBING CONNECTION

AUTUMN 2015

10. The water heaters in the manifold must be of the same

model type.

11. Refer to the following diagram for examples of manifold

principals associated pipe work designs and valve

positioning.

SERIES VS. PARALLEL INSTALLATION

The Rheem Equa Flow principle requires the connection

of units in parallel. Early design and installation practices

involved the installation of multiple water heaters in series

i.e. the outlet of the first water heater was connected to the

inlet of the second unit and so on…

The pros and cons of installing a bank of water heaters in

parallel and in series are shown in the following table.

HEAT TRAPS

When installing a mains pressure storage water heater

without an inbuilt trap and running the heated water piping

“up and over” to connect to fixtures, it is necessary to install

a heat trap to avoid during periods of no hot water use,

heated water naturally rising up the pipe until it cools and

then falling back to the water heater due to its increased

density.

This activity within the pipe line will increase heat loss and

subsequent running costs of the system.

The new range of Rheem Stellar Stainless Steel electric

storage water heaters from 80 up to 315 litre capacity are

designed with the hot water outlet at the very top of the unit.

When plumbed in a vertical rise from this outlet position

on the system, the manual installation of a heat trap with a

minimum fall of 250mm is required to not allow the pathway

for heat loss to occur.

SERIES VS. PARALLEL INSTALLATION

SERIES

PARALLEL

Flow is limited to that

obtainable from one water

heater.

Flow is proportional to the

number of heaters in a bank;

i.e. 2 water heaters can give

twice the flow of one water

heater, 3 water heaters three

times the flow etc.

Pressure loss increases as

water passes through each

water heater.

Pressure loss of the entire bank

is equal to the pressure loss of

one water heater.

First water heater in line does

most work. Second water

heater may not operate other

than to maintain losses.

All units do equal share.

Full recovery only when last

water heater in line is operating.

Full recovery when any water

is used.

Breakdown of one unit and

removal for service closes down

whole operation.

Any unit can be closed off

at anytime, leaving rest in

operation.
