Gold Coast-based pipe repair franchise, Nuflow has been contracted to apply its technology to the heritage-listed Old Parliament House in Canberra. The contract includes 60 of the building’s wall-mounted heaters and made use of a hot water radiator system connected to a central boiler.

Nuflow’s technology essentially creates a pipe within a pipe that structurally repairs all types of water and sewage pipes, from high pressure water service mains able to withstand pressure of up to 1800kpa, as well as domestic sewage and water applications.

Nuflow managing director Ed Ahern says that a substantial investment has been made to restore the nearly 100-year-old radiators.

“The minerals in the water passing through over the years created sludge and corrosion causing the radiators to leak,” he says.

“They tried to solder or braze the radiators to fix the issue but a more permanent solution was required if they were to maintain this classic heating system.

“Fortunately Old Parliament House facility managers, Chris Grebert and Stephen Kaye, were attending a conference and stopped at the Nuflow display where they saw how our technology had been successfully used across Australia to repair corroded pipes.”

Stephen adds that it was important for the building to maintain its unique and original engineering features.

“That’s why we seek out innovative and cost-effective solutions that can help us retain the use and functionality of these important heritage elements at the same time as ensuring the building is safe, sustainable and enjoyable for our visitors,” he says.

The heaters have kept many world leaders warm including Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh, General Douglas MacArthur, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and President Lyndon Johnston warm throughout their visits.
