Startup ‘Superyard’ Aims to Share Construction Materials

Superyard was launched in early August 2022 with the aim of making it easy to share and trade unused building materials stock sitting in yards all over Australia.

The construction marketplace aims to alleviate some of the sector’s increasing prices and stock shortages.

Ritchie Djamhur, the founder of Superyard, says that the circular economy marketplace was born from a frustration with the current materials procurement process in the construction industry.

“Unless you have a strong network of your own to reach out to, your only solution is to buy new or use a broker”, says Djamhur. “I wanted to disrupt that process and bring the construction community together to share materials that could find a new home and make it fast, easy and inexpensive”.

Djamhur is inviting construction and building businesses of all sizes to sign up to the service, which officially launched on Monday 8th August. “It’s free to join and you can use it to post your own materials or browse the stock that’s available and get in contact with vendors directly through our chat system. We don’t charge commission or listing fees.”

Djamhur says major construction suppliers are also signing up to Superyard to assist in exposing excess and off-hire stock to a larger audience. “This is a huge development because large suppliers are usually very protective of their stock levels and pricing. It really shows how the industry is evolving as it addresses the current challenges.”

Global construction manufacturer Peri is one such supplier that has joined Superyard’s growing list of members. “Sustainability is a core value of Peri Australia”, says Yannick Lelievre, Managing Director of Peri Australia. “We’re pleased to encourage the redistribution of material through Superyard to minimise waste and support the circular construction economy.”

Djamhur hopes that Superyard becomes a hub for the construction and building industry. “If using Superyard helps a business survive by reducing material costs and creating cash for their unused stock, then we’ve achieved our goal.”

Australia’s construction sector has over 396,000 businesses, employing 1 million workers. Over half of the sector’s turnover goes to material purchases, or over $230 billion. (source: IBISWorld Australia Industry Report E/Construction, June 2022)
