Setting the right trap
3monkeez is a relatively new company, but they have definite ideas on how sinks should function. As such they have dedicated the business to designing and manufacturing innovative kitchen sink solutions for the domestic market.
Included in those ranges is the EnviroSink and Smart Sink waste.
“The idea for the Enviro Sink Package and Smart Sink waste first came about in early 2011, due to discussions with designers, plumbers and householders through trade shows, project consultations and market feedback,” says marketing manager, Alicia Downey.
“Having been involved in developing trade waste solutions for commercial kitchens, we began receiving enquiries from customers and designers who believed a domestic version of our original scrap trap – designed to manage trade waste in commercial kitchens – was required for domestic applications. The need to protect our plumbing systems and waterways extended further than commercial applications, and we developed the Smart Sink Waste and Enviro sink packages to assist in protecting our environment from solid wastes entering our sewer systems and water ways. This product is especially effective in high density housing and unit developments and for plumbing systems connected to a septic or an enviro cycle system.”
The Envirosink began life as an idea in February 2011 and by June a working idea had been formulated. Consultation and testing was conducted in conjunction with the staff at CSIRO Ryde.
“Our research resulted in us double injection moulding the waste. This meant creating a black finish on the inside of the waste and white on the outside to eliminate any discoloration of the waste,” Alicia says. “It stays looking brand new and complements today’s high end finishes in domestic kitchen applications.”
The finished product was released to market in December 2011. It is robust, simple and effective.
When the Smart Swink Waste was first developed it was installed into a house in Dargan NSW. The residents in this house are on a septic system and it allowed them to keep the solids out of the septic system and therefore have to pump it out less often. They have been using the scraps as compost on their garden and they found it very easy to install.
“The waste provides dual protection for the drainage system in that it incorporates a removable basket strainer and a fixed secondary strainer which captures solid waste material in the sink before it enters the drainage system. When the sink is drained by removing the separate stainless steel plug the removable basket is simply lifted out of the body of the trap and emptied. The food scraps can then either be composted or disposed of with other house hold waste.”
The smart sink waste is designed to retro-fit in place of a standard 90mm sink waste outlet, for new applications it will fit directly into a 90mm sink outlet. It has a 50mm BSP thread at the bottom of the trap so will fit to any standard 50mm S or P trap. If purchased as part of the Envirosink range of domestic sinks these are available as a top mount, under mount or square corner sinks that will complement most any style of domestic kitchen.
The smart sink waste is a fully approved high quality sink waste system which if used effectively has a positive impact on our environment and reduces maintenance required of our drainage and sewer systems. It removes solid waste entering the plumbing system and has the added benefit of being able to recycle food and kitchen scraps as compost. It extends the life of drainage systems and will improve the reliability of plumbing systems.
“It improves the drainage system be eliminating solid waste entering the system. This reduces blockages, failures and odours,” Alicia says.
As far as plumbers are concerned, the product is simple to install and easy to maintain, meaning less call backs and happier clients. Plumbers can offer this as a solution to protect and extend the life and reliability of the drainage system. This means it is also a perfect solution for high density housing.
The Envirosink is an original product to the Australian market and has benefit for plumbers, the waste system and the broader environment.
