SafeWork NSW was notified of a section of a multi-storey commercial property collapsing at 52 – 56 Railway Parade during a demolition process at around midday on Wednesday 22 January.

Scaffolding was also affected in the accident while strong winds and the risk of further collapse prompted emergency services to be called to the scene.

They have been working closely with Fire and Rescue NSW, NSW Police, the Burwood Council and engineers from Public Works throughout the night to make sure the area is safe.

So far, there have been no injuries to any workers reported.

SafeWork NSW inspectors have remained on-site and have issued notices to make sure work is done in a safe manner to prevent further demolition works until it’s safe to resume.

Businesses that don’t comply with work health and safety laws can face fines or prosecution. From 1 March 2025, demolition license holders must ensure all demolition workers have completed the prescribed training if required to undertake licensed demolition work.

“While this incident will need to be thoroughly investigated, SafeWork NSW is putting demolition businesses on notice that we will not accept them putting worker and public safety at risk,” SafeWork NSW head Trent Curtain says.

“Every worker in the State, regardless of what they do and where they live, should expect to go home to their family at the end of every working day and SafeWork NSW inspectors have the power to and will issue penalty notices or, when necessary, initiate prosecutions when our laws are broken.”
