MPA NSW disappointed with ban on natural gas appliances

The Master Plumbers Association of NSW (MPA NSW) is disappointed by the City of Sydney’s ban on natural gas appliances.

That will take effect in all new homes from 2026, with further bans proposed for offices, hotels and service apartments.

The MPA NSW and other industry stakeholders have been ignored despite being invited to contribute expert advice during the consultation process.

Natural gas is a critical, regulated energy source for heating, cooking and emergency backup during blackouts. The removal of some appliances will reduce energy resilience across Sydney, increase reliance on a single power source and may be a dangerous risk in unlicensed gas installations.

MPA NSW urges the NSW State Government to intervene and ensure that future energy policies regarding appliances are guided by safety, practicality and inclusivity.

“The City of Sydney is pushing forward with a policy that disregards expert input, public safety, and energy security in one sweeping motion,” MPA NSW chief executive Nathaniel Smith says.

“Banning natural gas appliances won’t stop people from wanting them. It will push more households into illegal, DIY LPG setups that pose extreme fire, health and safety risks.”
