Master Plumbers ANZ gives statement on gas energy policy
Master Plumbers Australia/New Zealand (MPANZ) has given its statement following recent discussions regarding the Greens’ and Teal independents on gas policy.
The policy, which proposes terminating gas-fired power generation within five years in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia, has raised concerns for MPANZ, who strongly believe that individuals in leadership roles, including federal MPs, should avoid conflating natural gas with less environmentally friendly fossil fuels.
MPANZ says the initiative threatens to disrupt the federal government’s strategy to accelerate the transition to renewables while maintaining a stable energy supply.
“Natural gas is not just an energy source it’s a vital component of our security and prosperity. To jeopardise our gas infrastructure is to jeopardise our economic future,” Master Plumbers Association of NSW chief executive Nathaniel Smith says.
“We must adopt a balanced approach that integrates natural gas as we transition to renewable energy sources, ensuring a reliable and sustainable energy supply for all Australians.”
A report commissioned by Australian Energy Producers has warned that halting investment in gas could jeopardise electricity supply in eastern states within two years, potentially leading to a major economic disruption.
Additionally, MPANZ says if the government opts to ban gas development amid pressure from the Greens and other independent members, the ramifications could extend beyond energy production, affecting compliance with international LNG contracts and risking manufacturing job losses.
MPANZ has called for informed dialogue that recognises natural gas’s vital role in our energy landscape and urges all leaders to champion policies that promote energy security while advancing towards cleaner alternatives.
