Labor promises to fast-track formal qualifications of skilled tradies

The Australian Labor Party has promised, if re-elected, to fast-track the formal qualifications of skilled tradies in a $78 million pledge that aims to boost new home buildings in Australia.

The Federal Government says it will establish an advanced entry trade training program from 2026 to support 6,000 unqualified workers to get formal recognition.

Minister for Skills and Training of Australia Andrew Giles says that the government is making it easier for workers with knowledge and skills to get the formal recognition and qualifications they deserve.

This pledge aims to mirror the success of the NSW Department of Education (Training Services) Trade Pathways for Existing Workers Program, which has seen over 1,200 workers achieve their trade qualification in an average of seven months rather than the usual apprenticeship term of three to four years.

The program was funded under the previous Federal Liberal Government of which allocated $53 million, and in partnership with industry, developed innovative and quality ways to award suitable existing workers formal qualifications. Energy Skills Australia was a recipient of this program.
